I have issues dropping in. I know you should always try to drop in from parallel to perpendicular, but in some situations at my local skate park, that's not an option. Would I just lift the back tire up and hope I don't catch it on the edge or is there some trick to it?

You can bunnyhop into it a bit. It just depends on how much clearance on the ramp if you can go in however you want. So take your bike and just walk it with your hands to see what you can do.
